Conspiracy theorists – Types, Steps, Terror

WHY do people become conspiracy theorists?
WHY are conspiracy theorists so frustrating to talk to?
WHY do conspiracy theorists exhibit so extreme behavior?

These questions will be answered in this book as well as the reasons why the prevailing initiatives are ineffective.

It is a false assumption that there is only one type of conspiracy theorist and that he is receptive to common sense, dialogue, evidence, and that he is generally prepared to participate in an open, democratic society on equal footing with everyone else.

Nothing points to the fact that conspiracy theorists in general can be influenced.

The authors argue that there are three types instead of one: The Novice, the Preacher, and the Warrior. Each type exhibits different behavior and responds differently when approached by commonly accepted methods.

The authors present a structured approach for these groups of citizens, such as two simple five-step models for analysis and handling of the methods of the conspiracy theorists.

The models can be applied by everyone and also work outside the world of conspiracy theorists.

The application of the models will not convince the conspiracy theorists, since this is close to impossible, but it will diminish the spread of conspiracy theories and contribute to improving the quality of the democratic debate – and perhaps prevent terror.

Steen Svanholm is a teacher, musician, author, lecturer, and debater, focusing on logic, science, and critical thinking.

Claus Larsen is an IT-consultant, author, lecturer, and critic of the supernatural, the paranormal, mysticism, pseudoscience, pseudohistory, miracles, cults, and other manifestations of myths and superstitions

The authors have since 2012 done research in conspiracy theories and conspiracy theorists, starting with the terror attack on September 11, 2001. Based on the existing research and the authors’ own field research, they have developed new analyses and explanatory models of conspiracy theorists and the theories they believe in.

Library review report

What characterizes conspiracy theorists? The book can be read by anyone interested in the origins of fake news and conspiracy theories, and it will be suitable for preparing assignments at high school level and above

Description

The background section briefly outlines the phenomenon of conspiracy theories and the societal problems of their existence. This is followed by an examination of the three different types of conspiracy theorists: Novice, preacher and warrior. For each type, the ability to listen and express oneself is examined, as well as how they are best handled in a debate. The false debate, i.e. the type of debate where understanding is not desired, but only control, is examined in 5 steps, and specific examples of the 5 steps from the real world are given. Then the focused dialogue, which is the opposite of the false debate, is examined. The last section of the book concentrates on the connection between conspiracy theories and terrorism/conspiracy theorists and terrorists, and the focus is on religious, political and ethnic terror, among other things. The book ends with a list of sources

Rating

A really useful book that briefly and precisely provides insight into the traits that are common to the different types of conspiracy theorists. The book will be suitable for use in larger assignments at high school level

Recommendations

“I have read the book with great interest. It is well written. It is strongly documented with evidence and filled with good advice on dealing with this quite serious phenomenon and deserves wider distribution.”
Hans Jørgen Bonnichsen
Former chief criminal inspector and operational and police professional leader for the Danish Police Intelligence Service, and an expert on terrorism

Reviews from Saxo.dk

“Conspiracy Theorists” by Steen Svanholm and Claus Larsen is an important and much-needed introduction in a time when conspiracy theories are gaining traction and followers at an unprecedented pace, primarily driven by social media.

Although the book primarily deals with conspiracy theorists, it can also be read with benefit if you are simply interested in critical thinking. Its step-by-step instructions for a constructive debate are thus useful in any discussion where the opposing party relies on loose arguments.
