The terror attack led to perhaps the largest criminal investigation in the history of the United States of America. The FBI, the federal police, assigned 7,000 of its 11,000 agents to the case. So far, the terrorist Zacharias Moussaoui, known as the 20th hijacker, has been sentenced to life in prison, and another trial is underway against five terrorists, among them Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who is considered to be the principal architect of the terror attack on September 11, 2001.
