The bin Laden family and the Bush family are old business partners

Claim

The bin Laden family and the Bush family are old business partners through many years.0

Background

The claim is used to support a conspiracy between Osama bin Laden and former Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush.

Facts

The bin Laden family is very large with perhaps up to 600 members. Osama bin Laden’s father, Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, had no fewer than 54 children with 22 wives. Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden started from humble beginnings but built a growing business including building entreprises and investment. The parents of Osama bin Laden divorced shortly after his birth and he grew up with his stepfather, Muhammad al-Attas. Early on, Osama bin Laden broke off relations with his father’s side of the family. None of the family members who left the United States in the days following September 11th had had any connection with Osama bin Laden.1 2 Osama bin Laden was not exactly popular in Saudi Arabia. His Saudi citizenship was withdrawn in the early 1990s due to arms smuggling from Yemen and because he criticized the regime, when it allowed American forces to use military bases in the country during the Gulf War from 1990-1991.4 The Bush family’s business interests stretch far and wide and it is thus no surprise that some vague connections exist to that part of the bin Laden family which has no contact with Osama bin Laden. “The connection” between George W. Bush and Osama bin Laden must therefore be considered far-fetched.

Logic

The claim is basically guilt by association: You are guilty, merely because you have some obscure connection to a bad guy. This method is often used in propaganda, e.g. if a Jew committed a crime somewhere in the world, the Nazi regime would use that to incite hatred for all Jews. It is a contradiction to include Osama bin Laden and/or al-Qaeda, when it is simultaneously claimed  that neither him or the organization was behind the terror attack.

Conclusion

The claim is therefore:
  • Misleading
  • Illogical
  • Contradictive
